SpeakOut Training in San Diego in September!
We’re honoured to be selected to present our first training since the publication of the book at a major international conference. Wendy is delighted to be returning to IAP2, as she has spoken and undertaken successful training programs at several international IAP2 conferences and is the recipient of two IAP2 awards.
The two-day training will be held as part of the pre-conference offerings of the International Association for Public Participation (IAP2) annual conference in San Diego, California, on Saturday and Sunday, September 19th and 20th.

Both Wendy and Wiwik will facilitate this course, working as a team.
What it’s About?
This practical, hands-on course introduces the SpeakOut community engagement model, providing participants with the knowledge and skills to select, design, conduct and evaluate SpeakOut processes for different target populations. Participants will learn to locate a project within a conceptual community engagement framework and select appropriate SpeakOut designs, displays and exercises.
Aims of the Course
This course aims to provide participants with the knowledge and skills to select, design, conduct and evaluate SpeakOut processes which:
• Involve direct contact with community members
• Aim to be creative as well as representative
• Involve a wide cross-section of a community and
• Are effective.
Compatibility with the Themes of the IAP2 Conference
Our SpeakOut training aligns closely with the IAP2 Conference themes.
1. Sustainable decision-making processes:
The great value of the SpeakOut process is that it can be modified to accommodate different community contexts and realities, including budget constraints.
It can accommodate a great deal of volunteers and community participation in all stages of the process. This contributes to the sustainability of the model.
2. Sustainable decisions:
This model, because of its inherent transparency and the opportunity for deep community engagement in all stages, including analysis of results, encourages proponents and organisers to be more accountable in their processes, leading to decisions that may be more stable and flexible than those arrived at with more formal processes.
3. Sustainable outcomes:
One of the important qualities of a sustainable project or process is wide agreement about the foundational principles and value of that process or project.
This can only occur when there has been full discussion of all aspects of it.
The SpeakOut, particularly because of its open and collaborative quality, encourages people to develop both clarity and depth about topics of community concern that can lead to better decision-making along the track, as community capacity has been strengthened.
